Pinnie Awards!

As you may know, Pinterest is a creative forum that allows people to share stuff—whether it’s design that you love, places you want to go, or simply, stuff that you think is interesting. Cabell’s affinity for Pinterest is well known here at WORK, so we were super excited to  see that other people appreciate his boards as much as we do. According to Rob Schwartz, the Chief Creative Officer at TBWA Chiat Day, an awesome Pinterest  deserves an award, which is something that we think could really catch on! We love the idea of Pinnies-gold pushpins that go to the most inspiring Pinterest Boards, and we are very proud that Cabell is one of three people with the most inspiring pinboards!

Check out Cabell’s Pinterest and this awesome Forbes Article!

Anatomical Cross-Sections Made with Quilled Paper

For her Tissue Series, artist Lisa Nilsson constructs anatomical cross sections of the human body using rolled pieces of Japanese mulberry paper, a technique known as quilling or paper filigree. Each piece takes several weeks to assemble and begins with an actual photograph of a lateral or mid-sagittal cross section to which she begins pinning small rolls of paper. Depending on its function she rolls the paper on almost anything small and cylindrical including pins, needles, dowels, and drill bits. She even builds the wooden boxes containing the cross-sections by hand!

Kids Love Stickers

In this installation, artist Yayoi Kusama created a large white space to serve as a canvas for what he calls, The Obliteration Room. Over the course of two weeks, kids were invited to transform this space by decorating it with thousands and thousands of colored dot stickers. Cool installation, but how did little kids reach the ceiling?!

SHWOOD!

So a while back I posted a video from the guys over at Shwood. Their handmade wooden glasses are awesome and I am now the proud owner of a pair. I couldn’t be happier with the quality and everything down to the instructions is made with great attention to detail. What an awesome piece of design.

Vintage Soda Crates

NotCot.org went on a road trip and found some pretty awesome vintage soda crates. I love how the paint has that great organic deterioration that can only come from years of use. The type and simple logos on these crates are fantastic. I would love to see any one of these brands create throwback cases to go with throwback can or bottle packaging.

5 Year Old Girl Comments on Logos

This is interesting, funny and pretty cute- Ohio-based identity designer Adam Ladd asked his 5-year-old daughter to comment on some popular logos.

Congratulations!

A team of students from the VCU Brandcenter won the international MBA Innovation Challenge. The Innovation Challenge competition is the world’s largest and most established business innovation competition. For nine years running, the brightest and most creative graduate students from universities all over the world have been matched with leading companies in an experience designed to address the most pressing business and social innovation challenges. This is the 4th time we’ve entered the Innovation Challenge competition. In 2008, we came in 2nd out of 264 teams. This year, our team bested 186 other business school teams from the most prestigious B-schools like Wharton, UVA, Harvard, Duke, UC Berkley, Indian School of Business, London School of Business, MIT, Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, UNC-CH, UCLA and many others. Not only did a team from the Brandcenter win, but we had three teams in the final 15, the only school to have do so.

We are so proud of “Team Brandslam” (Jennifer Clinehens, Cody Pate, Katlyn Williams and Ryan Dowling) for winning the Innovation Challenge and earning the VCU Brandcenter the title of  ”the most innovative business school in the world.”

A very special thanks to Professor Don Just for his leadership, advising and mentoring of all of the teams including Team Brandslam’s project for AT&T. They were charged with developing a cloud-based program to help businesses cut costs for AT&T.
The team and Don are ringing the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange this afternoon and they’ll be holding the grand prize check for $20,000.
Again, we’re very proud of Don and the team AND for the opportunity to prove to the world what we’ve known all along….that the VCU Brandcenter is “the most innovative business school in the world.”
